Making fire - just like in the stone age

How did people first get the idea of making fire? make fire? And how did they manage to start fires again and again? What must it have been in the Stone Age at the fire? What will people have have spoken to each other and whether mammoth tasted good?

In order to explore these questions a little on a practical level, we at IGG moved the 5a history class to the courtyard. In groups of 3 students each, the kids were given the task of making a fire with fire steel and tinder. They quickly realized: It takes patience and skill. The joy was all the greater when the homemade pile of wood finally burned.

Many thanks also to the indulgence of parents when the children came home as "incense burners". Unlike in the Stone Age, we fortunately have a quick remedy for stinky clothes in the form of washing machines and powder. But in order to experience history up close, you are also allowed to smell like a Stone Age man for an afternoon.
